
Mary Magdalene “Madge” King married John Harold Carter in May 1930. From this union were born three children: John Harold Jr., Lawrence Robert and Miriam Theresa. Madge completed the 11th grade at Old M Street High School and went to work at The Government Printing Office as a Book Binder. There, she met John Harold and subsequently married him. She worked there in the Bindery Section until her death. Harold, as he was called, worked there as a clerk after completing 12th grade at Armstrong High School. Harold and Madge enjoyed reading and playing cards. Harold and she had a strong devotion to education, always stressing to go as far as you possibly can in school, instilling in their children to complete high school and college. They did not want them to struggle as they did. On the job, they sent love notes to each other. Madge called Harold “Jean” and he called her “Cherie
